This weeks Kick About over on Red’s Kingdom is the perplexing painting – Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez. I loved the self reflection and self insertion with this painting. I decided to focus on the many frames throughout the studio and, in the same manner, interject some of my own self into my illustrations by adding other photography and drawings within the frames themselves, and into a studio only an artist could make sense of.
A recent illustration – I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in the maximalist details of this one. When I was in Uni I was introduced and learned of the geometric coloured shapes and loose line art of UPA Animation, I find myself leaning into the style of UPA lately and I am enjoying the nostalgia of it. Prints of this piece can are purchased here if wanted.
A third and final set of offerings for this weeks Kick About over on Red’s Kingdom, the muse being the uncanny grandiose art of Christo & Jeanne- Cluade. This bunch in particular focussing in on the transformative light that finally appeared through the clouds, as well as a sprinkling of water droplets that clung to the clingfilm.
A second set of offerings for this weeks Kick About over on Red’s Kingdom the afflatus being the otherworldly art of Christo & Jeanne- Cluade. Created from swirling clingfilm around cuttings of twigs, this set is starting to get into the more minute details of the miniature dioramas, observing how the aloof sunshine transformed the composition.
This weeks Kick About over on Red’s Kingdom is the perplexing art of Christo & Jeanne- Cluade. I wanted to make a miniature version of Christo & Jeanne- Cluade’s impressive uncanny installation art, but attempt to make it look larger as if I had the resources to produce something of that scale. So I did some deadheading of branches and flora around my garden, wrapped clingfilm around them and stuck the encapsulated snipings into styrofoam to keep them steady as I photographed the results. I loved how in certain shots of Christo & Claude’s pieces the sun shone through – it reminds me of poppy seed pods or Chinese lanterns. As I was taking photos, in spurts the sun broke through the clouds of the dreary sky and lit the tombs of these plants in spots and lines, another treat was after a slight sprinkling of rain, which made me focus more on the intrinsics of the composition rather than its initial scale”
The third and final cluster of images created in response to JMW Turner’s Vesuvius in Eruption. Leaning into what the photograph was telling this bunch took a different turn to its predecessors.
A second assortiment of mixed media photography created for this weeks JMW kick About over on Red’s Kingdom. The goal being to turn my photography of Rural Ireland into ruinous oil paintings.
This weeks fortnightly creative prompt over on Red’s Kingdomis the painting – Vesuvius in Eruption by Joseph Mallord William Turner. I was awestruck by the colours of turners painting, especially the light and darkness and contemplated about how the land after Mount Vesuvius would have been teamed in nothing but dark ash and charred to a crisp. The suffocating poison smoke billowing into the air, the wispy remains of trees and how the lava would have cemented over the landscape. I decided to seep through the surplus of landscape photography I have of of rural Ireland and gave a whirl of harmonising in apocalyptic darker hues to turn my photography into the style of ruinous oil paintings. Here is some mixed media images created by digitally painting over my photography of those images of rural Ireland.
A random assortment of environment art that I had yet to share on Gentle Giant – created for the spooky season or just the exploration of colour in space, fun as always.
